Solomon Keal's Music Newsletter, December 2006

Hello everybody!

Welcome to the December edition of my music newsletter.

My latest album, "Peace of Heaven," featuring my own peaceful solo
piano compositions is now available to buy!
You can purchase the album from SolomonKeal.com, CDBaby.com, or from
FountainPublishing.com. It is available from most places for
$15.00.

Subscribers to this newsletter can purchase CDs for $11.00 a piece
when buying 3 or more CDs directly from me! Subscribers also get
free shipping! Send an email to solomon@solomonkeal.com to take
advantage of these deals.

My albums will be for sale at the Kempton Craft Sale, on Saturday
December 9th, at 9:30 AM, in the Kempton New Church Society Room,
Kempton PA.

I had fun performing at my first Whisperings Concert, in
Mechanicsburg PA on December 1st. I was the first artist on the
playlist, and pretty nervous, so I unfortunately screwed up the first
piece, which was "Angels We Have Heard on High." But the rest of the
concert turned out alright. And it was a lot of fun to get to know
some other Whisperings artists.

Some of the projects I will start working on next year include:

1. Making sheet music available.

2. A flute and piano album with my sister Roxanne.

3. An album of love songs with my wife Tirah.

4. A blues/jazz piano album.

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!

Grammy Ballot News

Pianist/Composer/Producer and Whisperings artist, Lisa Hilton is on the current Grammy Nominations Ballot for her latest release, "Midnight In Manhattan" in five different categories. They are, "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Hit The Road Jack", Best Instrumental Composition for "Midnight In Manhattan", Best Instrumental Arrangement for Henry Mancini's "Moon River", Best Jazz Album and Best Engineered Album/ NonClassical for Al Schmitt.

Grammy nominations are fiercely competitive with only a 2%-6% change of winning in these categories. Anyone nominated, has a 20% chance of winning, so being nominated
is
quite an honor.

Surprisingly, women make up less than 5% of those on the ballot in these instrumental categories, and have not fared well for winning either. No woman has won a Grammy for Best Jazz Album, Best Instrumental Arrangement, or Best Pop Instrumental in the last 10 years. In composing, Annie Lennox and Madonna have both won Grammy's recently.

Grammy nominations will be announced by NARAS on December 12th, 2006. Awards take place February 11th 2007 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles.

David Lanz and Christian Housel Concert in Boise Idaho

Hi there:

What a great concert last weekend (October 21st) here is Boise with David Lanz and world flautist Gary Stroutsos.  The concert was held at the beautiful Cathedral of the Rockies in the historic northend of Boise.  I had such a great time with David and Gary.  It was kind of interesting both promoting and playing the concert.  About 200 folks came to the concert to enjoy a wonderful evening.

I opened the evening with a five song set including mostly songs from my recent album "After the Rain".  During three of my songs, my former band Ruberry Jam joined me on stage.  They added sounds of bass, acoutic guitar, and light percussion added much to the performance.

David Lanz came out at about 7:30 and opened with a beautiful improvisation that just blew everone's mind.  David followed up with the familiar "Heartsounds" and a couple of others.  Gary then joined David on stage and played from their latest C.D. "Spirit Romance" released on the Narada Label.  At one point after the song Serenada, the audience was completely silent almost stunned by the beauty of it.  It was a very cool moment.  IMO, David's best song of the night was "A whiter shade of Pale".  Wow could you feel the emotion on that one.  Gary played various flutes throughout the night, wowing the croud with his ethereal sounds.

After the intermission, David played much of his familiar work, but did add a new tune entitled "Rain Dancer" that hasn't been recorded yet.  How great was that!  Wow!  After twenty plus albums, David keeps it going.  After a curtain call, David ended the show with "Christofori's Dream" of course.

Another great show with David!

Guinness World Record music anniversary

Rome, Italy - Two years ago, composer pianist Christian Calcatelli began a concert that would go down in history – according to Guinness World Records - as the world’s “longest solo music internet broadcast”.

Streaming live over the web for its whole duration, Christian improvised for 30,000 people for 60 hours and 1 minute on a STEINWAY D concert grand. With the audience being allowed to follow also through a live video stream, the task of entertaining was quite taxing as the same quality had to be kept in respects of the different times zones.

When America was sleeping, in fact, Asia and Europe were wide awake plus there was an audience right on location in the heart of historical Rome.

Christian performed in his new age/classical contemporary style. The event, known as The Calx Project, aimed to raise awareness and funds for PLAN INTERNATIONAL and their programmes to benefit children in South America.

After reviewing the 60 hours of audio and video recordings, Christian selected material for a double CD collection entitled “A broken Record – Original music from The Calx Project” which contain live recordings of the improvisations taken from the first hour to the last, inspiring countdown at the end of the thirds night.

Samples from this event are available on Christian’s website at www.calcatelli.com

Bradley Sowash - New Book Review

“If you’ve ever been flipping channels and stumbled across the weekly television series The Piano Guy on PBS, you know who Bradley Sowash and Scott Houston are: two pianists with the simple message that playing piano should be fun. With Sowash and Houston’s Play Piano in a Flash! The Next Step burgeoning musicians can learn how to interpret chord symbols and position them on the piano, play left-hand self-accompaniment patterns and generate spontaneous right-hand melodies. It helps that The Next Step is full of huge diagrams documenting recognizable songs like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star because, as the back of the book states, sometimes pianists get bored with classical music and just yearn to play something jazzy. Here’s the book to show you how to do it.”

ROBIN SPIELBERG HAS NEW CD!

ROBIN SPIELBERG HAS NEW CD!

Robin Spielberg has teamed up with North Star Music to release her
14th CD, SPA PIANO. SPA PIANO is a study of Spielberg's most
relaxing, contemplative compositions culled from ten years of her
work as one of today's best selling pianists/composers. The recording
is perfect for relaxation, romance, meditation, message and yoga.
"After releasing Beautiful Dreamer, a lullaby album in 1999 adults
have been asking me to create something this soothing for THEM," says
Robin, from her PA home. "North Star had recently gone into the
candle business, and they decided to release a series of music with
candles. The concept just clicked for me."

Sound samples of SPA PIANO and a look at the melon-cucumber candle
that can be purchased alongside it, are available at
